What Is the Difference Between an Architect and an Interior Designer?

The boundary between architecture and interior design is blurry by intention. Understanding both disciplines helps you make smarter decisions for your project.

In Pakistan, and across the world, the roles of architect and interior designer are frequently confused — sometimes by clients, occasionally by practitioners, and often deliberately blurred for commercial reasons. Here is a clear-eyed look at the distinction.

The Architect

An architect is a licensed professional trained in the full life cycle of a building: site analysis, structural logic, building envelope, space planning, environmental performance, and construction administration. In Pakistan, a registered architect holds a B.Arch or M.Arch from an accredited institution and is registered with the Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP).

Architects are legally required for new construction, structural modifications, and projects above a certain floor area. They produce the drawings that get submitted to municipal authorities for building permits. They coordinate with structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers. They administer construction contracts.

The Interior Designer

An interior designer works within the envelope of an existing or newly completed building. Their domain is finishes, furniture, lighting, soft furnishings, spatial planning within fixed walls, and the experiential quality of a space. A skilled interior designer understands materials, proportion, colour theory, and human psychology. They do not typically produce structural drawings or submit for building permits.

Where the Lines Blur

At Axis Studio, our practice spans both disciplines. When we design a villa, we are simultaneously architects (shaping the building) and interior designers (shaping the experience inside it). This integrated approach produces the most cohesive results because the interior logic informs the architectural decisions from day one, not as an afterthought.

The key question to ask yourself: do you need someone to shape a building or a space within an existing building? If the former, you need an architect. If the latter, an interior designer may suffice. If you want the building and the interior to feel like a single, unified work of art — you want both, ideally from the same hand.
